Water is the most natural and most environment-friendly of all extinguishing mediums. Its extinguishing effect is mainly based on its capability of binding heat, smoke and harmful substances. Water extinguishes by cooling. It is used mainly for fire-fighting in classification A fires (ember producing substances). Thus, within a few years a fire protection installation may have amortized. Besides that, preventive fire protection measures taken during the construction of a building may lead to easier acceptance by the building control office, if an automatic fire protection plant is installed.
